Prairie State Legal Services Rock Island Il

PSLS represents clients in a variety of substantive areas of law, including housing, landlord, foreclosure defence, disability, utilities, utilities, health, consumer, family and domestic violence. PSLS also has a tax clinic through which it advises and represents low-income individuals in tax disputes. Attorneys represent clients before administrative bodies and, in litigation and appeals, in state and federal courts. Prairie State employees are active participants in the communities they serve, working closely with social services and others to address issues facing low-income people, seniors, and people with disabilities. The program values creative and collaborative approaches to problem solving. Community education is an important part of the program`s work, as it maximizes the program`s impact over a wide geographic area. Prairie State works hard to ensure that law students and graduates receive substantive work and have the opportunity to connect with clients. Duties assigned to articling students and fellows include interviewing clients and witnesses, gathering evidence, conducting legal research and, if the student`s skills permit, participating in negotiations and representing clients before administrative authorities. Interns and fellows eligible for a 711 licence may appear in court on behalf of their clients.
